Senior Scientist
Spire Corporation

Kurt Linden is currently a Senior Scientist in the Biomedical Division of Spire Corporation. He is responsible for initiating and managing biomedicals, including VCSELs and high power diode laser arrays. Last year he took an optoelectronics-related R&D activities in support of this division. Dr. Linden has been with Spire since 1984, and was involved with development of advanced semiconductor optoelectronic epitaxial device structure11-month leave to assist a new telecom component startup, Axcel Photonics, as Director of Operations. Axcel Photonics is now a fully-integrated pump diode laser manufacturing operation. From 1976 to 1984 Dr Linden was Manager of Diode Laser Activities at Laser Analytics, Inc. He managed a laboratory which carried out R&D on Pb-Salt diode lasers and manufactured these devices for scientific and commercial spectroscopy applications. Dr. Linden was responsible for tunable diode-laser design, crystal growth, wafer processing, laser fabrication, packaging, test, and reliability evaluation. From 1966 to 1976 He was a senior engineer and group leader at Raytheon. His responsibilities included research and development of III-V compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices (LEDs, lasers and photodiodes) and microwave devices (mixers, IMPATT diodes, and detectors). He has a broad base of industrial experience with semiconductor device design, materials growth and processing, material and device evaluation techniques, device packaging, device testing, and reliability evaluation.

Dr. Linden is a senior lecturer with the Northeastern University state-of-the-art Microelectronics/ Computer Technology program and has taught optoelectronics and microelectronics courses for over 20 years He has also lectured at the MIT Summer Program on lasers, and has produced several nationally-televised tutorial video recordings for NTU and The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and has written a CD-ROM book on Diode Lasers and Optical Detectors. Dr. Linden is a regular tutorial instructor on diode lasers and detectors at annual SPIE conferences, and has presented numerous lectures at local and regional meetings. He has chaired and continues to chair annual SPIE conferences on applications of diode lasers and LEDs, is a reviewer for the technical journals Applied Physics Letters and Journal of Applied Physics, and has served as an expert witness on optoelectronic-device related cases. Dr. Linden has published over 50 technical papers in the area of semiconductor optoelectronics.
